Dufferin OPP charge three local residents with impaired driving following traffic complaints

Dufferin OPP has charged three local residents with impaired driving-following numerous traffic complaints.

On May 28th, at about midnight, officers were dispatched to the area of Fifth Avenue in Orangeville for a traffic complaint. Offices arrived on scene and located a vehicle of interest. While speaking with the driver, officers initiated an impaired driving investigation.

A 31-year-old male from Mono, has been charged.

On May 30th, at about 6:00 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area of 6th Line and Highway 89 in Amaranth after receiving reports of a male driver slumped over in the driver’s seat of a vehicle that was blocking a live lane of traffic.

Fearing a medical emergency, officers and emergency personnel responded immediately. On arrival, officers located the vehicle and spoke with the driver. A female passenger was also found inside the vehicle and appeared to be slumped over.

While speaking with the driver, officers observed signs of impairment and subsequently initiated an impaired driving investigation. During the investigation, officers located open alcohol and drug paraphernalia inside the vehicle.

A 40-year-old male from Amaranth, has been charged with.

On June 1st at about midnight, Dufferin OPP was dispatched to the area of Highway 89 and Highway 10 after receiving numerous traffic complaints regarding a possible impaired driver.

The vehicle had reportedly been observed travelling into oncoming traffic. Officers were able to locate the suspect vehicle on Highway 10, just south of Highway 89, in Mono.

Officers initiated a traffic stop and spoke with the driver. During their interaction, officers observed signs of impairment and subsequently initiated an impaired driving investigation.

A 26-year-old male from Dundalk, has been charged.

The accused individuals are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Orangeville at a later date to answer to the charges.

Simcoe County students bring home gold at Canada-Wide Science Fair

Students from the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) have earned national honours after competing in prestigious science and skilled trades competitions across Canada.

Five SCDSB students represented Team Ontario at the Canada-Wide Science Fair, held from May 23rd to May 30th. The event included project judging, STEM experiences at the University of Alberta, a STEM expo and public exhibitions.

Two SCDSB students were awarded bronze medals in their respective categories. Anne B. of Bear Creek Secondary School earned bronze for her project, Petal to the Metal, which explored using Chlorella algae to remove heavy metals from mining runoff. Jasper C. of Cookstown Public School also received a bronze medal for his project, Follow the Light.

Meanwhile, two SCDSB students captured gold medals at the 2026 Skills Canada National Competition, held May 28th and May 29th. The competition brings together students and apprentices from across the country to demonstrate their abilities in skilled trades and technology fields before industry judges and employers.

Peyton M-P. of Banting Memorial High School earned a gold medal in Car Painting under the guidance of teacher-coach Scott Fuller, while Sam C. of Collingwood Collegiate Institute won gold in Automotive Service Technology with teacher-coach Kevin Dea. Innisfil Transit changing pricing model

Innisfil Transit will move to a new distance-based pricing model beginning next month, expanding how residents can use the service and introducing options for group travel.

The Town of Innisfil says the change will replace the current Transit Hubs system, which has been in place since the municipality launched its partnership with Uber in 2017. Under the new model, the Town will subsidize trips anywhere within Innisfil, as well as trips to and from the Barrie South and Bradford GO stations.

“It’s been almost 10 years since we established Innisfil Transit,” says Mayor Lynn Dollin. “We know people like it and are using it, but we’ve also heard how our community wishes the system was more flexible. With the coming changes, residents will be able to enjoy the Town’s subsidy when travelling all across Town. Also, families and friends will now be able to travel together—something that wasn’t possible with the previous Hubs-based system.”

Under the new pricing structure, riders will book an Innisfil Transit trip through the Uber app and pay a minimum flat fee, while the Town covers up to $10 of the trip cost. For single riders, the minimum fare will be $3.25.

The changes will also introduce a multi-passenger voucher, allowing groups of up to four people to travel together using the service for the first time. Multi-passenger trips will have a minimum flat fee of $6.50, with the same subsidy structure applied.

Town officials say the updated model is intended to provide greater flexibility while maintaining affordable transportation options for residents travelling for work, school, errands, and recreation.

Nottawasaga OPP catch driver going 120 km/h in Essa 60-zone

A 29-year-old Barrie driver is facing stunt driving charges after being caught travelling at double the posted speed limit in Essa Township.

The Nottawasaga OPP Traffic Unit was conducting patrols on the 8th Line of Essa, south of County Road 21, when officers stopped a vehicle travelling 120 km/h in a posted 60 km/h zone.

As a result, the driver’s licence was suspended for 30 days and the vehicle was impounded for 14 days under Ontario’s stunt driving legislation.

The driver, a 29-year-old resident of Barrie, was also issued a future court date to answer to stunt driving and speeding charges.

PROJECT CHAMELEON – Group convicted of charges following trial into 2023 human trafficking investigation

Four people have been convicted and a fifth has pleaded guilty following a major human trafficking investigation that began in Innisfil in 2023 and led to charges against seven individuals.

South Simcoe Police launched what became known as Project Chameleon after responding to a call in May 2023 from a woman who reported she was being held against her will at a residence in Innisfil and exploited for the purpose of sex trafficking. Police said the victim was safely removed from the situation and later disclosed she had also been sexually assaulted by one of the suspects.

The investigation continued for several months and identified additional victims. On November 1st, 2023, officers from South Simcoe Police, Barrie Police and York Regional Police executed search warrants at properties in Innisfil and Newmarket, resulting in multiple arrests and charges related to human trafficking, sexual services and drug offences.

Years later, and following a 10-week trial at the Barrie Courthouse, four accused were convicted on Wednesday, June 3rd, 2026.

40-year-old Oneil Hopkinson of Newmarket has been found guilty of:

Trafficking in Persons x 2
Material Benefit from the Trafficking of Persons x 2
Procuring (Sexual Services) x 1
Material Benefit from Sexual Services x 1
Sexual Assault x 2

One of the accused plead guilty prior to the trial commencing and was convicted.

30-year-old Edgar Martinez of Innisfil has been found guilty of:

Trafficking in Persons – S.279.01 of the Criminal Code x 1
Sexual Assault – S.271 of the Criminal Code x 1

The last remaining accused involved in Project Chameleon is scheduled to stand trial later in June.

Dias and Singh are also scheduled to stand trial in November 2026 on drug-related charges connected to Project Chameleon.

Call from Barrie restaurant employee leads to impaired driving arrest

A local restaurant employee is being credited for helping Barrie Police stop an allegedly impaired driver before he could leave a parking lot and enter traffic.

Barrie Police were called to a restaurant near Fairview Road and Essa Road at around 10:20 p.m. on Sunday, May 31st, after an employee reported that an intoxicated customer had left the establishment and entered a vehicle.

When officers arrived, they located the vehicle with its engine running and a man seated behind the wheel. Police say they immediately detected a strong odour of alcohol and observed a beer can in the vehicle’s centre console.

Officers also noted the driver had glossy, bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and difficulty maintaining his balance after exiting the vehicle.

The man was arrested and transported to Barrie Police Headquarters, where further testing was conducted. Police say the results indicated the driver was nearly four times the legal alcohol limit.

As a result, a 44-year-old Barrie man has been charged with impaired operation and operation while impaired with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding the legal limit.

His vehicle was impounded and his driver’s licence was suspended under the Highway Traffic Act.

Barrie Police are reminding residents that impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of serious injuries and deaths on Ontario roads and encourage anyone who suspects a driver is impaired to call 911.

South Simcoe Police arrest of pair of teens following early morning vehicle theft

Two youths are facing multiple charges after a stolen vehicle crashed on Highway 400 in Bradford West Gwillimbury this week.

Officers responded to a collision involving a Honda CR-V and a transport truck on the northbound lanes of Highway 400, south of County Road 88, at around 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3rd.

South Simcoe Police said the Honda CR-V became disabled following the collision, affecting traffic in both the northbound and southbound lanes while emergency crews worked to clear the scene. Officers worked alongside the Ontario Provincial Police to manage traffic and continue the investigation.

According to police, witnesses reported seeing the two occupants of the Honda CR-V flee the scene on foot toward Bradford immediately after the crash. Officers quickly located and arrested both individuals.

Investigators later determined the Honda CR-V had been reported stolen from Peel Region earlier that morning.

As a result of the investigation, a 17-year-old from Vaughan and a 15-year-old from Mississauga have been charged with several offences, including:

Theft of motor vehicle
Possession of stolen motor vehicle
Possession of automobile master key
Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
Fail to remain at the scene of a collision
Fail to comply with release conditions

The 17-year-old accused was held for a bail hearing. The identities of both accused are protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

South Simcoe Police thanked witnesses who provided information, motorists who experienced delays, and the Ontario Provincial Police for their assistance.

Barrie man arrested after allegedly pulling knife on two people

A Barrie man is facing multiple charges after allegedly threatening two people with a utility knife in the city’s downtown core last week.

Barrie Police say the incident happened on Wednesday, May 27th at around 7:45 p.m. near Meridian Place on Simcoe Street. Investigators allege a man approached two individuals and asked them for cigarettes. When they declined, the suspect became agitated.

Police say one of the individuals confronted the man, at which point he allegedly produced a utility knife, extended the blade, and threatened to harm them before fleeing westbound on Dunlop Street.

No injuries were reported.

Officers reviewed CCTV footage from the area and were able to locate a suspect matching the description provided. The man was arrested less than an hour after the incident, and police seized a utility knife.

As a result of the investigation, a 26-year-old Barrie man has been charged with:

Assault (two counts)
Assault with a weapon
Uttering threats to cause bodily harm
Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
Failure to comply with a probation order

The accused is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
