Clearview receiving funding for emergency preparedness

Clearview Township is receiving provincial funding to strengthen its emergency preparedness and response capabilities.

Simcoe-Grey MPP Brian Saunderson announced the province is investing up to $46,828.70 through the Community Emergency Preparedness Grant to help the municipality better respond to emergencies. The funding will support the purchase of essential supplies such as cots, blankets, and a generator for emergency shelters, as well as an enclosed utility trailer to improve the storage and deployment of evacuation resources in areas prone to prolonged power outages.

“This investment will help Clearview Township strengthen its emergency preparedness and ensure residents are supported when it matters most,” says MPP Saunderson.

“From severe winter storms to extended power outages, having the right equipment and resources in place is essential,” adds Mayor Doug Measures. “Clearview is grateful for the support from the Provincial Government and the Ministry of Emergency Preparedness and Response. Minister Jill Dunlop and our MPP Brian Saunderson have demonstrated they care about the smaller communities across our province and are helping to keep our towns safe.”

The province says the grant is part of a broader effort to improve local resilience, with $15 million invested since 2023 to support hundreds of communities across Ontario.

SCDSB relaunches video series covering student achievements

The Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) is launching a refreshed video series to highlight student achievements and school activities across the region.

Building on a weekly series that began in 2018, the new “SCDSB Weekly” features a new host and updated format, showcasing standout moments, events, and initiatives from schools throughout the board. The series aims to highlight innovative classroom learning, student-led projects, and the contributions of staff and students that bring school communities to life.

The first episode features students from Chris Hadfield Public School and Sir William Osler Public School participating in the SCDSB Low Elements Challenge Course, where they developed leadership skills, supported one another, and engaged in outdoor learning experiences.

New episodes will be released throughout the school year on Instagram, Facebook, and X, as well as YouTube.

Barrie Police arrest local man following child exploitation investigation

A 29-year-old Barrie man is facing charges following a child exploitation investigation by local police.

Barrie Police say the arrest was made on Wednesday, April 8th after a four-month investigation that began with a report from the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children regarding the upload of child sexual abuse material. Investigators say a search warrant was executed at a residence in the city’s central area in February, where several electronic devices were seized and later analyzed, leading to the identification of images and videos containing child sexual abuse and exploitation material.

The unnamed accused has been charged with possession of and accessing child sexual abuse and exploitation material.

Police have shared information and tips on staying safe online here, as the investigation continues.

Caledon OPP charge three individuals following investigation into obstructed licence plate

Caledon OPP has charged three individuals following an investigation into an obstructed licence plate over the weekend.

On April 11th, at a about 2:30 a.m., officers on patrol in the area of Mayfield Road and Coleraine Drive, in Bolton, observed a vehicle with an obstructed licence plate due to a black plastic cover upon it. Officers subsequently conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and began an investigation.

The investigation revealed that the vehicle was previously reported as stolen and the two licence plates on the vehicle were 3D-printed and did not belong to the vehicle to which they were attached.

As a result of the investigation, three individuals, all from Brampton, were arrested and charged.

OPP reminding drivers safety starts behind the wheel

The Central Region Headquarters of the OPP is reminding drivers that safety starts behind the wheel. Wet roads, reduced visibility, pooling water, localized flooding, and the potential for dense fog in some areas can make driving hazardous when conditions can change quickly.

Significant rainfall is expected to persist over the coming days, increasing the risk of water collecting on roadways, washouts, debris, and sudden road closures. These conditions may develop rapidly and can be difficult to predict, particularly in rural areas.

Flood conditions can develop quickly and may present serious dangers to motorists. Drivers are encouraged to choose alternate routes or delay travel when conditions worsen.

Taking a few extra precautions can make all the difference. Plan ahead, stay alert, and stay safe.

Services return to normal at Headwaters Hospital

Water service to Headwaters Health Care Centre in Orangeville has now been restored following a significant water leak that occurred within the building on Monday, April 13.

Redirects for obstetrics, surgery and the emergency department have been lifted. All services have resumed.

However, all patients and visitors are asked to continue using the Main Entrance to enter and leave the hospital until further notice.

Impaired driver facing charges following late-night collision

A 35-year-old Barrie man is facing impaired driving charges following a late-night collision in the city’s south end.

Barrie Police say officers responded at around 10:20 p.m. on Thursday, April 2nd to a report of a two-vehicle collision on Anne Street South involving a suspected impaired driver. No injuries were reported, but officers say one of the drivers showed signs of impairment, including unsteadiness and glassy eyes, leading to a roadside screening test that resulted in a fail. The individual was arrested and taken to Barrie Police headquarters, where further testing confirmed the driver was over the legal alcohol limit, and officers also located a half-empty container of alcohol inside the vehicle.

The accused has been charged with:

Drive Motor Vehicle with Open Container of Liquor

The vehicle was impounded for seven days and the driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days. Police are reminding the public to call 911 if they suspect an impaired driver.
