Gussapolooza returns to Cookstown with packed line-up of independent artists

The Gussapolooza Music Festival is returning to Cookstown this month!

This all-ages festival will feature 47 artists, nine BassWeb DJs and three stages, with performances spanning a variety of musical styles. Artists on the lineup include the headlining band Feral Minks, along with others like Suzi Kory, Propter Hawk, Already Late, and more.

As one of the main organizers for the festival, and founder of Gussapolooza, Russ Robson is looking forward to what he thinks might just be the best show they’ve ever put on.

Festival-goers can also enjoy food trucks, a beer garden, artisan vendors, a kids zone, interactive art, a health and wellness area and a creator’s convention. The festival will feature family and general camping, allowing visitors to stay for the full weekend.

It’s a big year for the band Feral Minks. After winning Artist of the Year at last year’s festival, lead singer and guitarist Kent Merriam is excited to once again hit the stage – only now as the headliners.

‘Guss’ puts a focus on independent artists every year, with Robson noting that they also provide a little something for every musical taste. The BassWeb EDM stage will feature nine DJs performing Friday and Saturday nights, with house, techno and UK garage among the styles represented.

It runs Friday, August 21st to Sunday, 23rd at the Georgian Bay Steam Show Grounds in Cookstown.

Gussapolooza is open to all ages, with children 12 and under admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult. Day passes and weekend passes with camping options are available. Ticket details can be found here.

Stevenson Memorial Hospital unveils new Board of Directors

Stevenson Memorial Hospital has introduced its new Board of Directors.

The group of community leaders will provide governance oversight as the hospital moves through a period of renewal and growth. They are:

Jeff French, Chair, Board of Directors
Feria Bacchus, Member, Board of Directors
Sanjay Dhebar, Member, Board of Directors
Nicole Ivison, Member, Board of Directors
Rory MacKinnon, Member, Board of Directors
Michael Miceli, Member, Board of Directors
Deanne Minns, Member, Board of Directors
John Nzioka, Member, Board of Directors
Michael Willmott, Member, Board of Directors

This new Board brings experience in governance, finance, health care and community leadership, along with strong connections to New Tecumseth, South Simcoe and surrounding communities.

The group of nine will work with hospital leadership to advance strategic priorities, support operational excellence and guide the construction of a new, expanded hospital facility designed to meet the needs of the growing community.

SMH President and CEO Deepak Sharma says the new directors bring the leadership and health-system knowledge needed to help build the future of health care close to home.

Board Chair Jeff French says the group is committed to ensuring decisions remain focused on the needs of patients, families, staff, professional staff and volunteers.

Barrie man found in possession of child sexual abuse and exploitation material

A 52-year-old Barrie man is facing several charges following an investigation by the Barrie Police Service Internet Child Exploitation Unit.

The investigation began Tuesday, August 4th, involving a male allegedly in possession of child sexual abuse and exploitation material. The individual was located in Barrie and arrested without incident.

On Wednesday, August 5th, officers executed a residential search warrant in Barrie and seized a recording device. A second search warrant was carried out the following day, resulting in the seizure of a computer device.

The man has been charged with:

Possession of child sexual abuse and exploitation material
Accessing child sexual abuse and exploitation material
Making child sexual abuse and exploitation material
Voyeurism
Making sexually explicit material available to a child

Police continue to examine the electronic devices seized during the investigation and say additional charges may be laid.

The Town of Orangeville has placed a new school crossing near Princess Margaret at the intersection of Sarah and Wellington Street, along with new stop signs, to help students get to school safely.

Here’s what you need to know:

a new crosswalk runs from the north to south corner of Sarah at Wellington

the south corner stop sign on Sarah has shifted back slightly for crossing safety

new stop signs added on Wellington: southbound at Sarah and northbound before the school crossing

A crossing guard will be positioned only at the school crossing, during the school year.

New Tecumseth contributes $750,000 toward Stevenson Memorial Hospital redevelopment

The Town of New Tecumseth is donating $750,000 to the Stevenson Memorial Hospital Foundation’s Because of YOU Campaign.

This contribution was approved by Town Council in April and fulfills the municipality’s longstanding commitment to the hospital redevelopment project. The Town first pledged its support in 2019 and has continued to back the project to help ensure residents have access to healthcare close to home.

Mayor Richard Norcross says the contribution will be effectively doubled in value through support from the Morningview Foundation, helping advance the future hospital project.

The new Stevenson Memorial Hospital will nearly double the size of the current facility, with expanded healthcare services and modern spaces designed to meet the needs of growing communities across South Simcoe.

Man dead following collision in Innisfil

A 45-year-old man has died after being struck by a vehicle in Innisfil.

South Simcoe Police responded at around 10:00 p.m. Monday, August 10th, to a collision involving a pedestrian in the area of 6th Line and Sideroad 10.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say the driver and vehicle remained at the scene, and the driver has been cooperative.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who has video footage or information that may assist with the investigation is asked to contact South Simcoe Police at 705-436-2141 or 905-775-3311 and reference incident number PR26024247. Information can also be provided anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or online.
