Police in South Simcoe and Barrie hope they hold the key to preventing many of the vehicle thefts seen in the area.
The two services jointly announced a new initiative Wednesday (may1) which they hope will help combat, or at the very least lessen the number of vehicles being taken from residents.
In the coming weeks, both police departments will be making 10,000 Faraday bags available to the public.
The special bags are designed to prevent key-fob signals from getting out to criminals looking to steal vehicles.
The partnership between the two detachments was made possible due to a grant last November from the provincial government which will see $18 million over a three-year period for 21
projects across Ontario.
The Barrie and South Simcoe police services received $1.8 million combined as their portion of the province’s preventing auto thefts grant.
