The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) is warning of a possible measles exposure at Collingwood General and Marine Hospital (CGMH) on Sunday, May 4th.
Anyone who visited the hospital’s Emergency Department – including the “see and treat” area – between 11:14 a.m. and 8:28 p.m. that day may have been exposed. The health unit will be contacting affected individuals by letter, phone, or text.
SMDHU has confirmed four measles cases so far this year and is urging the public to check their vaccination status. People are considered protected if they’ve had two doses of the measles vaccine (MMR or MMRV), or if they were born before 1970. If you’re unsure of your immunization status, visit www.smdhu.org/records.
Symptoms typically appear 7 to 21 days after exposure and may include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, white spots in the mouth, and a red, blotchy rash that begins on the face. Even those vaccinated should monitor for symptoms for 21 days following possible exposure.
If symptoms develop, isolate immediately and contact your healthcare provider before visiting any medical facility.
