Residents across Grey, Bruce, and Dufferin counties can expect improved access to public transportation thanks to a $9.495-million investment from the Province of Ontario.
The funding comes through the Ontario Transit Investment Fund (OTIF), which supports the development and expansion of transit services in underserved communities, especially in rural areas.
Announced on Friday by local MPPs Sylvia Jones, Brian Saunderson, Lisa Thompson, and Paul Vickers, the multi-year funding will support the creation of an integrated regional transportation system led by the County of Grey, with support from Bruce and Dufferin counties and Saugeen Mobility and Regional Transit (SMART).
This year’s funding will maintain Route 2 of the Grey Transit Route, connecting Orangeville and Dundalk, while also supporting planning studies needed to build a larger, coordinated system. Over the next five years, OTIF funding will help cover startup and capital costs. The funding is allocated as follows: $145,000 in 2025-26; $2.5 million annually from 2026-2029; and $1.85 million in 2029-30.
Provincial officials say the investment will help connect residents to employment, education, healthcare, and community events.
More details will be shared by project partners as the work progresses.
