The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) is reminding Grade 11 and 12 students to update their immunization records by Tuesday, September 23rd to avoid school suspension.
Under the Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA), public health units must have up-to-date immunization records, a medical exemption, or an affidavit on file for all students. Currently, about 3,700 students in the region have outstanding immunization records.
Dr. Colin Lee, SMDHU’s associate medical officer of health, stresses the importance of this action.
“Ensuring immunizations are up to date offers the best protection against serious vaccine-preventable diseases and helps reduce the risk of outbreaks in schools.”
The health unit has been working with families throughout the year and has sent out suspension notices to those whose records are incomplete.
For families without a healthcare provider, the SMDHU offers immunization clinics at several locations, including Barrie, Collingwood, and Orillia. Students who have already received their vaccinations can easily report the information online. Additionally, the free CANImmunize mobile app can help families manage and share their records with the health unit.
The health unit emphasizes that keeping records current is crucial for community safety and a swift response to any potential disease outbreaks.
