The Ontario government is investing $7.3 million in projects aimed at strengthening the health and resiliency of the Great Lakes and their connecting waters.
As part of this province-wide initiative, $25,000 has been allocated to support environmental efforts in Simcoe-Grey.
Locally, the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority will use the funding for the Lake Huron Student Conference Model Project. The event will bring together 100 high school students and teachers for hands-on learning and shoreline stewardship activities along Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. The initiative is designed to foster youth leadership while making tangible improvements to the local environment.
“Georgian Bay and the Great Lakes are central to life in Simcoe-Grey,” says MPP Brian Saunderson, noting the importance of teaching the next generation about environmental protection. “It is encouraging to see provincial funding support projects that will strengthen the health of our shoreline.”
The funding comes through the Great Lakes Program and the Great Lakes Local Action Fund, both aimed at protecting, conserving, and restoring Great Lakes ecosystems. Since 2018, Ontario has invested more than $80 million in nearly 680 projects to safeguard the lakes, including shoreline restoration, wetland conservation, and trail expansion.
