National Fire Prevention Week (FPW) runs from October 5th to 11th, and this year’s theme is “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.”
Innisfil Fire & Rescue Services is highlighting the importance of safely buying, charging, and recycling lithium-ion batteries, which power everything from phones and laptops to e-bikes and power tools.
Residents are encouraged to follow key safety tips, including buying devices with certification marks like UL, ETL, or CSA; charging only with approved chargers on hard surfaces; unplugging devices when fully charged; inspecting batteries regularly for damage or unusual smells, heat, or noises; and recycling batteries responsibly through proper waste facilities.
“Fire safety begins in your home, and we all have a part to play to reduce the risk of fire hazards,” says Fire Chief Brent Thomas. “Educating yourself, and your family and friends is key to staying safe and we encourage everyone to join us to learn more about fire safety at the Pancake Breakfast in Cookstown on October 4th.”
The annual Pancake Breakfast, hosted by the Cookstown Volunteer Firefighters Association, will be held at Station 4 (23 King Street North) from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 4. The event will feature fire safety materials, firetruck tours, and a chance to meet local firefighters. IFRS will also bring fire prevention education to classrooms across Innisfil this month, reaching students in Grades 1 to 3.
