The Simcoe Auto Mayors Association is continuing its push to protect Simcoe County’s auto manufacturing sector following a successful second meeting earlier this month.
Led by New Tecumseth Mayor Richard Norcross, the group says they focused on securing meaningful federal support and ensuring that local manufacturers are not left behind by national policy changes.
The Association’s advocacy has already made an impact: a joint letter to Ottawa helped prompt a 60-day federal review of the Zero Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) mandate, announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney on September 5th. However, Mayor Norcross says more work is needed to address the ongoing effects of federal policy and international tariffs on Simcoe’s economy.
During the October 1st meeting, updates from Honda of Canada Manufacturing and ZF Automotive of Midland highlighted concerns about the ZEV mandate and trade pressures. The group plans to push for amendments to the federal policy, including reducing sales targets and recognizing hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) as part of Canada’s transition strategy.
Looking ahead, the mayors also intend to call for tariff relief on Canadian-made vehicles, promote workforce stability, and advocate for long-term investment in Simcoe’s auto sector.
“This is about protecting our communities,” says Mayor Norcross. “We’re asking Ottawa to stand with us—to support hybrid innovation and keep manufacturing jobs right here in Simcoe.”
