The South Simcoe Police are reminding residents to stay vigilant after a recent phone spoofing scam reported last month.
On Sunday, September 28th, a local resident believed they had been contacted by their bank and were told their cards had been compromised. They were instructed to place their bank cards in an envelope for pickup by an “employee.”
Investigators later determined that the victim had been contacted by scammers using a spoofed phone number, posing as bank representatives. One suspect remained on the phone, convincing the victim to share and update their passcodes, while a second suspect arrived in person to collect the cards.
Police warn that banks will never send employees to your home or ask for account information by phone. To protect yourself, never share personal details unless you initiated the call, hang up and verify directly with your bank, and avoid opening the door to unexpected visitors.
Anyone targeted or who receives a suspicious call is urged to report it to South Simcoe Police.
