The Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury has once again been recognized by the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority (LSRCA) with a Watershed Heroes Award, celebrating its continued efforts to reduce pollution and protect local water quality.
This award highlights the success of more than thirty “LittaTraps” installed in stormwater catch basins across the community, which have captured hundreds of kilograms of debris over the past year – preventing plastics, organics, and sediment from entering the Holland River and Lake Simcoe.
Mayor James Leduc praised the recognition, calling it “a testament to our Town’s proactive approach” in environmental stewardship. Councillor Jonathan Scott, Chair of the Green Initiatives Advisory Committee, said the traps demonstrate how “small, cost-effective investments can deliver real environmental results.”
This marks the second consecutive year Bradford West Gwillimbury has received the honour, following its 2024 recognition for advancing grassroots green projects through its Green Initiatives Advisory Committee. Drainage Superintendent Frank Jonkman added that the program is a clear example of innovation and teamwork making “a visible difference” in the community.
The Town plans to expand the litter trap program in priority areas to build on its early success and continue safeguarding the Holland River and Lake Simcoe watershed for years to come.
