As the festive season nears, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) is reminding residents to make informed choices about alcohol use and consider drinking less during holiday celebrations.
The health unit says moderation not only supports personal well-being but also sets a positive example – especially for young people.
According to Canada’s Guidance on Alcohol and Health, the more alcohol a person consumes, the greater their risk for both short- and long-term health effects, including several types of cancer, heart disease, and liver damage.
“Reducing your alcohol use during the holidays is a meaningful way to care for yourself and those around you,” says Mia Brown, manager of the health unit’s Substance Use Prevention and Harm Reduction program. “When you choose to drink less, you not only lower your risk for serious health conditions but also experience other benefits such as improved sleep, more energy, and a clearer mind. These positive changes can help you feel more present and connected with the people you care about.”
SMDHU also encourages adults to model responsible drinking (or choose not to drink at all) to help shape healthier attitudes among youth. Tips include setting clear limits, avoiding overpouring, showing how to decline alcohol politely, and offering alcohol-free celebrations.
For those hosting holiday gatherings, the health unit recommends offering non-alcoholic beverages, serving food, providing entertainment that doesn’t center on drinking, and ensuring safe transportation options.
