The New Tecumseth Rotary is inviting families to enjoy a festive trip to the movies this weekend while supporting a vital community service.
Two special screenings of Happy Feet will take place on Saturday, December 6th at the Circle Theatre in Alliston, with showtimes at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Admission is free with a pantry item or cash donation per person, with all contributions supporting My Sister’s Place, the local women’s shelter.
My Sister’s Place has been a cornerstone of safety and support in Alliston for women and children experiencing violence and abuse. Operating 24/7, the shelter provides crisis intervention, emergency housing, outreach services, legal and safety planning resources, and education aimed at prevention and empowerment. The organization highlights the urgent reality of gender-based violence: 6,000 women and children sleep in shelters each night across Canada, and every six days, a woman is killed by an intimate partner.
Speaking with Executive Director Deborah Herrington, she says they’ve seen an increase in need for their services over recent years.
The shelter’s programs are designed to encourage, educate, and empower those seeking safety. Services include legal support for women considering separation, resources on safe dating and online safety, and community education to raise awareness about domestic violence. Much of this work is made possible through public donations, volunteer involvement, and local fundraising efforts – making events like this weekend’s screenings especially meaningful.
Residents wishing to support the shelter can donate, volunteer, or learn more about its services here.
For immediate help, the 24/7 crisis line is available at 705-435-9400.
