Barrie Police are urging drivers to slow down and adjust to changing winter road conditions following a recent collision that left one person injured.
Officers say they have responded to a significant number of crashes in recent days caused by motorists travelling too fast for conditions, following too closely, or failing to adjust their driving on snow-covered, icy or slushy roads. Even when main routes appear clear, police note that bridges and side streets can remain slippery and unpredictable.
On Friday, February 6th, officers were called to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Huronia Road and Big Bay Point Road. Police say a passenger vehicle believed to have been travelling too fast for the slick conditions lost control and struck another vehicle. The driver of the second vehicle suffered minor injuries, and a 22-year-old driver has been charged with careless driving, which carries significant penalties upon conviction.
Police remind motorists that posted speed limits are intended for ideal conditions and that drivers are responsible for adjusting their speed based on weather and road conditions. Drivers are encouraged to slow down, increase following distance, allow extra travel time, ensure winter tires are installed, clear snow and ice from their vehicles, and make sure lights, windows and mirrors are fully visible before heading out.
