Ontario residents can cast a line for free this Family Day weekend.
The Government of Ontario is offering free fishing from Saturday, February 14th to Monday, February 16th, allowing Canadian residents to fish without purchasing a licence or Outdoors Card. Natural Resources Minister Mike Harris says the weekend is an opportunity for families to get outdoors and enjoy ice fishing while creating lasting memories.
While licences are not required during the free period, Conservation Fishing Licence catch and possession limits remain in effect, along with all other regulations, including sanctuary restrictions. Participants must carry government-issued identification showing their name and date of birth.
Officials are also reminding anglers to prioritize safety by checking ice conditions, noting that clear blue ice is strongest while white or honeycombed ice is weaker, and to let someone know their plans before heading out.
The Family Day weekend is the first of four free fishing opportunities this year, followed by Mother’s Day weekend, Father’s Day weekend and Family Fishing Week in late June. Outside of designated free periods, most Ontarians aged 18 to 64 require an Outdoors Card and fishing licence, which can be purchased online or at participating ServiceOntario locations.
