A 36-year-old Barrie man is facing multiple charges after a series of collisions earlier this month.
On Saturday, February 7th, shortly after 6:00 p.m., Barrie Police received a report that two men had been drinking at an establishment on Fairview Road before leaving in a vehicle. While officers were responding, a second call indicated the same vehicle had been involved in a collision near the intersection of Mapleton Drive and Silvercreek Crescent.
Police say their investigation revealed the vehicle was first involved in a rear-end collision at Ardagh Road and Hawkins Drive. Witnesses reported the vehicle left the scene, travelling westbound on Ardagh Road before turning onto Batteaux Street and continuing toward Mapleton Avenue and Silvercreek Crescent.
Investigators allege the driver then failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with two additional vehicles.
When officers arrived, they found the passenger being detained by a bystander, while the driver reportedly refused to exit the vehicle. Police say they detected a strong odour of alcohol and observed several containers of alcohol in plain view inside the vehicle.
The driver was taken to police headquarters, where breath tests were conducted. Police allege the results showed a blood alcohol level approximately 2.5 times the legal limit.
The 36-year-old has been charged with:
- Failure to stop after accident
- Dangerous operation
- Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
- Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
- Failure to surrender driver’s licence
- Use plate not authorized for vehicle
- Drive motor vehicle without a permit
A 35-year-old Barrie man who was a passenger in the vehicle has been charged with being intoxicated in a public place.
No serious injuries were reported. The investigation remains ongoing. Police are reminding residents of the dangers and legal consequences of impaired and reckless driving.
