Barrie Police are warning residents about a new scam involving a male caller claiming to be an officer contacting victims about suspicious activity on their bank accounts.
Police say victims were pressured to provide personal and financial information and were told that any financial losses would not be covered by their bank if they refused to cooperate. In one case, a victim received an email with a fake police badge and identification card in an effort to make the scam appear legitimate.
Investigators note the fraudulent badge contained several red flags, including a crest that does not match the official Barrie Police Service insignia, and was sent from a free email provider rather than an official BarriePolice.ca address.
Residents who are unsure about a caller’s identity are advised to hang up and contact Barrie Police directly through the non-emergency line at 705-725-7025 to confirm the officer’s name. Anyone who believes they have been targeted or victimized is encouraged to contact the Barrie Police Fraud Unit or report the incident online.
