A Barrie man is facing multiple charges after police say he was caught driving with a suspended licence following an alert from automated licence plate technology.
According to the Barrie Police, an officer on patrol received an Automated Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) alert at around 9:15 a.m. on Monday, March 2nd about a possible suspended driver.
ALPR technology automatically scans licence plates to check permits, vehicle status and Criminal Code alerts, providing officers with real-time information to support proactive enforcement.
Police observed the vehicle travelling northbound on Anne Street North and made a U-turn to conduct a traffic stop. Officers activated their emergency lights and sirens, but the vehicle continued northbound, weaving through traffic before turning onto Sunnidale Road and pulling into a nearby parking lot.
When officers approached the vehicle, they found a man in the driver’s seat and a woman in the passenger seat. Police say the man initially denied driving, claiming the vehicle had already been parked. Officers told him they had observed the vehicle travelling on Anne Street North and entering the lot, and ALPR images also captured the vehicle and its licence plate.
Following further investigation, police determined the driver had been operating the vehicle while his licence was suspended.
A 40-year-old Barrie man has been charged with:
- Driving while under suspension
- Fail to stop when signalled by a police officer
- Drive motor vehicle with no valid permit
- Operate a motor vehicle without insurance
Officials are reminding motorists that driving while suspended and failing to stop for police are serious offences.
