The Town of New Tecumseth will take centre stage on the global soccer scene after being selected as an official Team Base Camp host for the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Town officials announced that Team Panama will be based at the Nottawasaga Resort & Conference Centre during the tournament, marking a major milestone as Canada prepares to co-host the world’s largest sporting event. While matches will be played in Toronto, communities like New Tecumseth are expected to benefit from an influx of international visitors exploring the surrounding region.
“Being selected as a Team Base Camp for the FIFA World Cup 2026 is a tremendous opportunity for New Tecumseth,” says Mayor Richard Norcross. “This global event will shine an international spotlight on our community and deliver meaningful economic and tourism benefits that extend well beyond the tournament.”
The Nottawasaga Resort was chosen for its accommodations and training facilities, including on-site pitches that will allow Team Panama to train and prepare throughout the competition. The team is set to face Ghana, Croatia, and England during the tournament.
Officials say the designation positions New Tecumseth as an attractive destination for future international events, while also boosting local tourism and business activity. Simcoe County leaders add the opportunity will help showcase the region’s hospitality, with visitors encouraged to explore local restaurants, accommodations, and attractions during their stay.
With the World Cup drawing closer, the Town says more community-focused events and opportunities tied to the tournament are expected to be announced in the months ahead.
