The Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury is welcoming a provincial announcement supporting the development of a new hospital in East Gwillimbury as part of a broader plan to transform healthcare delivery across the region.
Officials say the project, led by Southlake Health in partnership with the Government of Ontario, will form part of a Distributed Health Network aimed at improving access to care across northern York Region and southern Simcoe County. While the new acute care hospital will be built in East Gwillimbury, leaders say the benefits will extend to surrounding communities.
Mayor James Leduc says the initiative represents meaningful progress for a rapidly growing region, noting the network model is expected to expand services across multiple locations, including community-based care centres.
The announcement also includes a $10 million provincial investment to support planning for both the new hospital and upgrades to the existing Southlake Regional Health Centre on Davis Drive.
Town officials say they will continue working with healthcare partners and the province to advocate for expanded local services, including more primary care and community-based healthcare options for residents.
Planning and design work on the project is expected to continue as the region prepares for future growth and increased demand on healthcare services.
