A South Simcoe Police officer is being credited for helping prevent a devastating barn fire in Innisfil this week.
Officers were called to a property on Innisfil Beach Road at around 11:10 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6th after the owner, who was away from the farm, noticed smoke and signs of fire inside a barn through security cameras and called emergency services.
Constable Colin Niewels arrived within minutes and saw heavy smoke coming from the barn. Drawing on his experience growing up on a farm and handling livestock, police say he entered the smoke-filled building, located the source of the fire, and extinguished it before it could spread further.
Innisfil Fire and Emergency Services also responded, clearing smoke from the barn and extinguishing remaining flames, while neighbouring farmers helped evacuate animals from the building as a precaution.
Officials say all 45 sheep and 16 cattle were safely protected, with no injuries or damage reported. Police say the fire is not considered suspicious.
