June is a busy month, and the list of proclamations this morning just proves that!
Several local municipalities are marking the month of June with proclamations recognizing Pride Month, National Indigenous History Month, and Seniors Month.
The Town of Innisfil has officially proclaimed June 2026 as Pride Month, recognizing the importance of equality, dignity, freedom, diversity, and inclusion. The proclamation celebrates the contributions of the 2SLGBTQI+ community and acknowledges the courage, resilience, and advocacy of individuals who have helped advance equality and human rights. Town officials say Pride Month also serves as a reminder of the ongoing need to challenge discrimination and promote awareness, education, and inclusion.
Innisfil has also proclaimed June as National Indigenous History Month and recognized June 21st as National Indigenous Peoples Day. The Town acknowledged its location on Treaty land and the traditional territories shared by the Anishinaabe peoples of Beausoleil First Nation, Chippewas of Rama First Nation, and Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation.
The proclamation encourages residents to recognize the significant contributions Indigenous Peoples have made to the community and country while continuing to support Truth and Reconciliation efforts. National Indigenous Peoples Day is observed annually on June 21, coinciding with the summer solstice, a time that has long held cultural significance for many Indigenous communities.
Meanwhile, the Town of New Tecumseth is also recognizing National Indigenous History Month throughout June. Mayor Richard Norcross and Town Council are encouraging residents to learn about and celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.
Town officials say the month provides an opportunity to deepen understanding of Canada’s shared history, acknowledge the ongoing impacts of colonization, and strengthen commitments to reconciliation through listening, learning, and engagement with Indigenous voices and perspectives.
Residents are encouraged to explore educational resources, participate in local and virtual events, and take time to reflect on the role Indigenous Peoples continue to play in shaping communities across the country.
In addition, Innisfil has proclaimed June 2026 as Seniors Month. The designation recognizes the important contributions older adults have made to the community and acknowledges their ongoing role as volunteers, mentors, caregivers, leaders, and active residents.
Town officials noted that seniors have helped build and sustain the economic strength, social fabric, and quality of life enjoyed throughout the community. The proclamation reaffirms the Town’s commitment to honouring, respecting, and supporting seniors while expressing gratitude for their lifelong contributions.
June is recognized across Ontario as Seniors Month, providing communities an opportunity to celebrate the achievements and lasting impact of older adults.
