The Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury is recognizing National AccessAbility Week with a series of initiatives aimed at promoting accessibility, disability inclusion and barrier-free communities.
National AccessAbility Week is a Canada-wide celebration that runs from May 31st to June 6th. It highlights the contributions of people with disabilities while encouraging organizations and communities to identify, remove and prevent barriers to accessibility.
“Building a truly inclusive and accessible community takes continued commitment, and in BWG, we are proud of the strides we’ve made together,” says BWG Mayor James Leduc. “Guided by the important feedback and advocacy of our Accessibility Advisory Committee, we continue to make meaningful improvements that help remove barriers and create opportunities for all residents.”
Throughout the week, the Town will encourage residents to take part in several activities, including a public survey that will help shape BWG’s 2025-2030 Multi-Year Accessibility Plan. The survey seeks feedback on areas such as customer service, information and communications, employment and other accessibility priorities.
A National AccessAbility Week flag-raising ceremony took place on Monday, June 1st, outside the BWG Leisure Centre at 471 West Park Avenue.
Residents are also encouraged to participate in Red Shirt Day on Wednesday, June 3rd by wearing red to show support for people living with disabilities and a commitment to creating a more accessible and inclusive Canada.
The Town will also share information throughout the week on social media about accessibility features available in local parks, transit services and other municipal facilities.
Residents with accessibility-related suggestions or concerns can submit feedback to the Town by email, with comments reviewed by the Accessibility Advisory Committee.
