Georgian College and the Georgian College Student Association (GCSA) have partnered with Canadian shared living platform Sparrow to help increase off-campus housing options for students in Barrie ahead of the Fall 2026 semester.
The initiative aims to connect students searching for housing with local homeowners who have spare bedrooms available, providing an alternative accommodation option as students continue to face a competitive rental market and limited housing availability near campus.
Through the Sparrow platform, students are matched with hosts based on factors such as lifestyle and living preferences. The program includes a written homeshare agreement, tenant insurance, support from a housing co-ordinator and the ability for students to build credit through monthly rent reporting.
According to Sparrow, hosts are required to complete an identity verification process before listing a room. Students and homeowners can review compatibility before agreeing to a living arrangement, and support remains available throughout the stay.
The Georgian College Student Association is sponsoring and endorsing the partnership as part of its efforts to support student housing and improve the overall student experience.
Sparrow, which was founded in Toronto five years ago, operates as a technology-driven social enterprise and currently serves communities across Ontario and British Columbia. The company says it has facilitated thousands of housing matches since launching.
College officials say the partnership provides another housing option alongside traditional residence and residence-style accommodations.
“At Georgian College, we know access to safe, affordable housing is foundational to student success and well-being,” says Hilary Villneff, Manager of Student Transition and Engagement at Georgian College. “This partnership with Sparrow adds an innovative off-campus housing option for our students while helping unlock more housing opportunities in the Barrie community.”
The first student-host matches are expected to be in place before the start of the September 2026 semester.
