A local student is heading to university with significant financial support after being selected as one of Canada’s top STEM scholars.
Jimmy McLaren, a grade 12 student at Georgian Bay District Secondary School, has been awarded a prestigious Schulich Leader Scholarship, receiving $120,000 to support his engineering studies at Western University.
The Schulich Leader Scholarship program recognizes 100 graduating high school students across Canada each year who are pursuing post-secondary education in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) fields.
School staff say McLaren stood out not only for his academic achievements, but also for his leadership, athletic involvement, and commitment to his community.
The Schulich Leader Scholarship Fund was established in 2012 by Canadian businessman and philanthropist Seymour Schulich. The program was created to encourage students to pursue careers in STEM disciplines, which are expected to play an increasingly important role in Canada’s future economy and innovation sector.
McLaren will begin his engineering studies at Western this fall.
