Ontario drivers will soon be able to travel at speeds of up to 110 km/h on most of the province’s highway network.
They’re raising speed limits from 100 km/h to 110 km/h on an additional 938 kilometres of provincial highways. The changes build on previous increases introduced on several highway sections in 2022 and 2024.
According to the province, nearly 89% of Ontario’s highway network will eventually be posted at 110 km/h, up from 43% today. Currently, about 873 kilometres of provincial highways already have the higher speed limit.
Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria said the move is intended to help commuters, workers and businesses move more efficiently across the province while maintaining safety standards.
The first changes will take effect Friday, June 26th on portions of Highways 401 and 416 in eastern Ontario. Additional sections of the Queen Elizabeth Way and Highways 400, 401, 402, 403, 416 and 417 will see speed limits increase gradually through September 30th.
The province estimates drivers travelling between Sarnia and Toronto could save nearly 20 minutes, while trips between Toronto and Ottawa could be shortened by almost 30 minutes.
Officials say speed limit increases are only being applied to highway sections that have undergone technical reviews and can safely accommodate higher speeds. The province notes that most of Ontario’s highway network was originally designed to support speeds of 110 km/h.
The government also confirmed that future highway projects, including the proposed Highway 413, the Bradford Bypass, Highway 7 between Kitchener and Guelph, and Highway 69 improvements, will be designed with a posted speed limit of 110 km/h.
