The Ontario government is investing more than $181,000 in economic development initiatives across Simcoe-Grey through the Rural Ontario Development (ROD) program.
The funding is part of a provincewide $20 million program designed to strengthen local economies, support rural workers, and help communities plan for future growth.
Simcoe-Grey MPP Brian Saunderson announced that five local projects will receive support through the first intake of the program, with funding directed toward economic development strategies and long-term planning initiatives.
Among the projects receiving funding is Nottawasaga Futures, which will receive $8,030 to develop a five-year roadmap aimed at growing Simcoe County’s film industry and attracting new investment. The Township of Essa will receive $50,000 to create an Economic Development Strategic Plan, while the Town of Collingwood has been awarded $42,500 for its “Pathways to Prosperity” Economic Development Action Plan.
The Township of Clearview will receive $31,144 to develop an Economic Development Strategy, and the Town of the Blue Mountains will receive $50,000 for an Economic Development Action Plan and Carrying Capacity Study.
Saunderson said the projects will help municipalities plan for growth, attract investment, and create new opportunities for residents and businesses.
Ontario Minister of Rural Affairs Lisa Thompson said the Rural Ontario Development program is intended to support local priorities and help rural communities build a foundation for long-term success.
Across Ontario, the province is investing more than $5.5 million through 116 projects during the first intake of the ROD program.
The Rural Ontario Development program is open to municipalities, small businesses, not-for-profit organizations, and Indigenous communities. Since 2019, Ontario has invested more than $34 million through the ROD program and its predecessor, the Rural Economic Development Fund.
The third intake for the Rural Ontario Development program is scheduled to open on August 17th. More information is available here.
