The Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury has recognized residents, organizations and teams for their contributions to the community through its annual Civic Awards program.
Established in 2007 as part of Bradford’s 150th anniversary celebrations, the Civic Awards honour individuals and groups whose service, leadership and achievements have made a positive impact on the community.
This year’s recipients are:
- Organization of the Year: Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association, recognized for community service initiatives including snow clearing for vulnerable residents, food drives that collected 7,000 pounds of food and $10,000 in donations, and ongoing blood donation campaigns.
- Sports Team of the Year: South Simcoe Storm U11AA, honoured for its success on the ice and its fundraising and volunteer efforts in the community. The team captured multiple tournament victories and championship titles during the season.
- Bravery Award: Mason Donkin, recognized for his courage while living with Chiari and for inspiring others through the Walk for Chiari, which has raised more than $100,000 for SickKids Hospital.
- Volunteer of the Year: Liz Lambert, recognized for her leadership and dedication as treasurer of the Portuguese Cultural Centre, helping strengthen the organization and support its ongoing work.
- Sports Achievement Award: Mba Chukwu, honoured for serving as captain of Canada’s Under-17 Men’s National Soccer Team during the country’s first-ever victory at a men’s youth FIFA World Cup.
- Green Initiative Award: Green Initiatives Advisory Committee, recognized for advancing environmental sustainability and supporting the Town’s Climate Mitigation and Adaptation Strategy.
- Senior of the Year: Christine Simpson, recognized for a lifetime of volunteerism and leadership with civic, faith-based and community organizations.
- Junior Citizen of the Year: Maha Qureshi, honoured for community service initiatives supporting residents in need.
- Citizen of the Year: Jennifer Pegg, recognized for more than 30 years of community involvement, leadership and support for local events and initiatives.
The recipients were recognized during the Town’s Canada Day celebrations at the Bradford & District Memorial Community Centre.
