A 33-year-old Vaughan man is facing an impaired driving charge after Barrie Police say several concerned motorists reported his dangerous driving last week.
Officers began receiving multiple 911 calls shortly after midnight on Friday, July 3rd about a vehicle travelling at inconsistent speeds, nearly striking guardrails and almost sideswiping another vehicle.
They located the vehicle travelling westbound on Mapleview Drive East near the Highway 400 bridge at what police described as a high rate of speed and conducted a traffic stop.
While speaking with the driver, officers observed glossy, bloodshot eyes and slow movements. Police say the driver initially told officers he had consumed “a lot” of alcohol before correcting himself and saying he had consumed “a little bit.”
The driver was arrested and transported to Barrie Police Headquarters, where breath tests allegedly revealed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.168%, more than twice the legal limit.
As a result, the 33-year-old has been charged with:
- operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration over 80 mg
The accused also received a 90-day driver’s licence suspension, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
Barrie Police thanked the members of the public who called 911 to report the driver’s behaviour, saying the reports allowed officers to locate the vehicle and remove an impaired driver from the road before anyone was seriously injured.
They remind residents to call 911 if they suspect someone is driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs. When it is safe to do so, callers are encouraged to provide the vehicle’s location, direction of travel, description and, if possible, the licence plate number.
