The family of two Innisfil brothers involved in a 2024 police shooting has filed a $17.5 million lawsuit against members of the South Simcoe Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police.
The statement of claim, filed July 14th, names six South Simcoe police officers, the police chief, and members of the OPP, alleging negligence and wrongful conduct.
This lawsuit stems from an incident on August 15th, 2024, when police responded to a family dispute at an Innisfil home. During the incident, 19-year-old Liam Hatton was fatally shot and his twin brother, Dylan Hatton, was seriously injured.
They allege the police response was negligent and is also suing the OPP over charges laid against Dylan following the incident. Those charges were later withdrawn by the Crown in October 2025.
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit previously concluded the officers used reasonable force and found no grounds to lay criminal charges.
These allegations in the lawsuit have not been proven in court.
