The Canadian Cancer Society’s Wheels of Hope program is looking for more volunteer drivers in Alliston to help ensure local cancer patients can get to and from important treatments and medical appointments.
The program currently needs three additional drivers in Alliston to meet demand. Volunteers provide transportation for people who may not have family or friends available to drive them to regional cancer centres in places such as Barrie and Newmarket, and potentially to hospitals elsewhere in the Greater Toronto Area.
Volunteer drivers can choose flexible hours and are asked to commit to at least half a day a week or a few days each month. Drivers receive mileage reimbursement or can choose a tax receipt.
For patients, having a reliable volunteer driver can make a significant difference, particularly for those who may otherwise face expensive transportation costs or difficulty getting to their treatments.
The Wheels of Hope program operates Monday to Friday, with no weekend driving required. Volunteers must have a valid driver’s licence with three or fewer demerit points and must complete the required screening and follow Canadian Cancer Society policies and procedures.
