When a senior became lost while making a quick trip for groceries, the simple actions of a caring citizen and one police officer who would say he’s “just doing his job” made all the difference.
On Monday, Aug. 10, 2026, around 11:30 a.m., Barrie Police received a call from a woman who was out for a walk near Johnson’s Beach when she came across an elderly woman who appeared lost.
An officer located the pair on the sidewalk along Johnson Street and upon speaking with them, learned the 87-year-old woman had taken a wrong turn and became disoriented. When asked, she provided her address but was confused about which way she needed to go. She was hot, given the warm late morning temperatures, and somewhat exhausted from her outing.
The officer discovered she lived in a building a few doors down from where they were standing. The officer’s body worn camera captured their interactions.
“Let’s walk over together. I want to make sure you make it home safe,” the officer said as the two began to head in the direction of her building.
“That was a very nice lady,” the senior stated, slowly making her way with her walker along the sidewalk next to the officer.
“It’s good she stayed with you,” he replied.
As the officer and senior entered her apartment, he offered to get her some water. Then he got to work contacting her family and making sure she had everything she needed before he bid goodbye.
“Please lock your door behind me,” the officer said as he left the apartment.
“Oh, I will. I’m not going anywhere. I don’t want to get lost again!” she replied.
This senior has a strong support system within her building and among her family, who were made aware of her adventures.
While this incident ended safely, it highlights the importance of planning ahead for families with elderly relatives who may become disoriented or lost.
