A 25-year-old Dufferin County man is facing charges after Barrie Police say officers observed a vehicle being driven unsafely in the downtown area.
Just after 1:00 a.m. on Friday, September 4th, officers patrolling near Collier and Mulcaster streets observed a vehicle travelling over freshly painted parking spaces, weaving between lanes and making an abrupt turn onto Mulcaster Street.
Police conducted a traffic stop on suspicion of impaired driving. When the vehicle stopped, police say the driver immediately exited, refused direction to remain in the vehicle and walked toward Dunlop Street.
Despite being directed to remain at the scene, the driver continued walking away and attempted to evade police by entering an alleyway. Police say the man continued to resist attempts to take him into custody, prompting officers to deploy a conducted energy weapon before placing him under arrest.
The man was taken to Barrie Police Headquarters on Fairview Drive for further investigation.
The unnamed 25-year-old is facing the following charges:
- Obstruct peace officer
- Failure to identify
- Have care or control of vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available
Barrie Police remind motorists that unsafe driving can put others at risk and that drivers are expected to follow the rules of the road and comply with officers’ directions during traffic stops.
