The Town of New Tecumseth is marking the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Wednesday, September 30th with initiatives focused on education, reflection, and understanding.
The day honours Residential School Survivors, remembers the children who never returned home and recognizes the ongoing journey toward truth, healing and reconciliation.
Mayor Richard Norcross says the municipality has a role to play in creating opportunities for education and reflection.
“Truth and Reconciliation is a responsibility we all share,” says Mayor Richard Norcross. “As a municipality, we have an important role to play in creating opportunities for education, reflection and understanding. The initiatives we’ve undertaken this year are just one step in our ongoing journey toward reconciliation, and we remain committed to continuing this important work.”
The Town has created an informal staff-led Truth and Reconciliation committee, bringing together employees from across the organization who are committed to advancing awareness and education. Throughout September, staff have also participated in a weekly educational email series exploring Indigenous history, teachings, perspectives and the importance of reconciliation.
On Wednesday, the Town will host its first learning and reflection session dedicated to the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The session will provide an opportunity to hear Indigenous perspectives, deepen understanding and consider how reconciliation can be supported through municipal work.
The Town will also host a flag-raising ceremony at Town Hall, inviting residents to gather in remembrance, reflection and solidarity.
Residents and visitors can also visit travelling exhibits at the Sir Frederick Banting Homestead and the Museum on the Boyne. The exhibits explore stories of resilience, survival and healing while providing opportunities to learn about the lasting impacts of Canada’s residential school system and engage in ongoing conversations about truth and reconciliation.
The exhibits will remain on display until October 31st.
