A 35-year-old Essa Township man is facing impaired driving charges after Barrie Police say he was found asleep behind the wheel of a running vehicle.
Police responded to a report of a suspected impaired driver in the area of Peel and Rose streets on Thursday, September 24th.
When officers arrived, they observed a man sleeping in the driver’s seat while the vehicle’s engine was running. An officer made several attempts to get his attention by knocking on the driver’s side window.
When the man eventually stirred and opened the vehicle door, the officer detected a strong odour of alcohol and noticed the vehicle was still in drive. The driver was directed to place the vehicle in park and turn off the engine before being arrested without incident.
He was taken to Barrie Police Headquarters on Fairview Road, where breath tests confirmed he was nearly two and a half times over the legal alcohol limit.
The Essa man is charged with:
- operation while impaired
- operation while impaired (over 80)
His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
