Innisfil idealab & Library
The Innisfil ideaLAB & Library is opening a new Micro Gallery dedicated to honouring Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit people.
The Lakeshore Branch will host the opening this weekend, giving community members an opportunity to view the installation and come together for reflection and connection.
As part of the project, community members wrapped 80 books in Indigenous-designed fabric. The books were then marked with the names of 69 Missing or Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls or Two-Spirit people. The remaining 11 wrapped books do not have names, representing a missing person who has yet to be found.
The installation is part of The Canadian Library Project, a national art installation and memorial created to honour the lives of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit people. The project aims to create a national living memorial consisting of more than 8,000 books, with each book representing a life, a story and a commitment to remembering.
The opening will include Innisfil ideaLAB & Library staff, members of the Library’s Truth & Reconciliation Committee and community members. The event is open to people of all ages, and library staff will be available to answer questions about the installation and the broader project.
It takes place at the Lakeshore Branch, located at 967 Innisfil Beach Road, on Saturday, October 3rd at 11:00 a.m., ahead of the National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit People on Sunday, October 4th.
