The Town of Innisfil has planted 300 trees across nine community parks as part of an initiative to expand the local tree canopy and support more resilient public spaces.
The project was made possible through a $73,100 grant funded by the Government of Canada through the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ (FCM) Growing Canada’s Community Canopies initiative.
Trees were planted at Meadows of Stroud, Nantyr Park, Huron Court Park, Kidd’s Lane Park, Emberton Way Park, Knock Community Centre, Ireton Park, Lormel Gate Park and Cookstown Community Park. Planting efforts focused on areas with proportionally lower tree canopy, with species selected to support climate resilience and biodiversity. The trees include native varieties of maple, oak, elm and locust.
“Trees are an investment in the places where our community comes together,” says Mayor Lynn Dollin. “By adding 300 trees to parks across Innisfil, we’re helping our neighbourhoods become more beautiful and resilient for many years to come. We’re grateful for the support from the Government of Canada and FCM that helped make this planting possible.”
FCM’s Growing Canada’s Community Canopies initiative was announced in May 2024 and aims to support the planting of at least 1.2 million new trees across Canada by the end of March 2031. The initiative provides funding, resources and coaching to communities undertaking tree-planting projects.
In Innisfil, the project supports the Town’s Urban Forest Strategy by increasing tree canopy coverage, enhancing biodiversity and helping distribute canopy more equitably across the municipality. A healthy urban forest can also provide shade, sequester carbon, improve air quality and create more comfortable outdoor spaces while helping communities adapt to a changing climate.
