The County of Simcoe says it is ready to provide immediate and ongoing support for individuals being relocated from encampments, including the one along Mulcaster Street in Barrie.
Officials credit the rapid response to the County’s 10-point Homelessness Prevention Plan, launched in 2024, which has already helped connect many residents to shelter beds, temporary accommodations, and permanent housing.
Outreach teams, shelter providers, and HART of Simcoe County staff have been actively engaging with those living in tents on Mulcaster. To date, 44 individuals have been connected with services, with 23 successfully relocated into housing or shelter options. As of September 10, an estimated 15–20 individuals remain, all of whom have been matched with available shelter spaces if they are willing to accept.
Those being supported are offered access to housing, wellness checks, transportation, food, clothing, personal care products, and temporary storage for belongings. The County’s 24-hour triage centre at 117 Tiffin Street remains open with increased staffing, though by-law restrictions prevent it from being used for overnight cots.
Looking ahead, the County has secured an additional 161 spaces to prepare for colder weather, including hotel rooms for families and pet owners, seniors’ supportive units, apartments for long-term housing programs, and staffed modular shelter beds. Pending city permits, two new modular housing projects are also expected to add 56 more beds this winter, complementing the existing transitional housing units on Blake Street.
County officials say they are prepared to expedite their winter response strategy to align with the mayor’s order, stressing that collaboration with the City of Barrie will be key to delivering both immediate and long-term solutions for vulnerable residents.
