Innisfil Fire & Rescue Services is taking part in the annual 12 Days of Holiday Fire Safety campaign, aimed at reminding residents to follow fire safety precautions during the holiday season.
Until December 23rd, fire departments across Ontario will highlight a different fire safety theme each day, sharing practical tips to help reduce the risk of fires in the home.
“This time of year is bittersweet for the fire service as we continue to see an increased number of fatal fires during the months around the holidays,” says Ontario Fire Marshal Jon Pegg. “Prevention is the best way to stay fire safe and by making fire safety a priority, you can avoid unnecessary disaster.”
The campaign covers a range of common holiday fire risks, including holiday lights, tree watering, candles and decorations, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, extension cords, cooking, heating sources, smoking, and lithium-ion batteries. Fire department personnel from across the province have contributed personal testimonials for each topic, drawing on real-life frontline experience.
According to the Office of the Fire Marshal, residential fire deaths are highest between November and January. Cooking is the leading cause of residential fires, while careless smoking is the leading cause of fatal fires. Officials also remind residents to test smoke alarms monthly, replace batteries once a year, and replace alarms entirely after 10 years.
The 12 Days of Holiday Fire Safety campaign is a partnership involving the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council, the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs, the Ontario Municipal Fire Prevention Officers’ Association, the Ontario Association of Fire Educators, and fire departments across Ontario.
