Three separate incidents kept officers busy in Innisfil last week, resulting in multiple charges, according to the South Simcoe Police Service.
The first incident happened at around 12:45 p.m. on Thursday, March 5th on Sideroad 5, when officers stopped a vehicle linked to a driver required to use an ignition interlock device. Investigators determined the vehicle was not equipped with the required device, and a 24-year-old man from Orangeville was arrested and charged with:
- Operate conveyance while prohibited – Criminal Code
- Improper braking system – Highway Traffic Act
The vehicle’s licence plates were seized and it was impounded for 45 days.
About 30 minutes later, officers responded to a single-vehicle collision near Innisfil Beach Road and Highway 400 where a vehicle had ended up in a ditch. No injuries were reported.
While police were still managing that scene, a third incident occurred at around 1:50 p.m. when a tow truck operator reported his arm and foot had been struck by a passing vehicle slowing for a red light near the crash site.
Officers stopped the vehicle and say they detected a strong odour of alcohol from the driver and located open alcoholic beverages in the centre console. A 68-year-old man from Coldwater was charged with:
- Operation while impaired – Alcohol and drugs
- Operation while impaired – Blood alcohol concentration
- Dangerous operation
- Fail to slow down and proceed with caution for emergency vehicle or tow truck
- Driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor
- Driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor readily available
- Drive motor vehicle with no currently validated permit
Police say the tow operator avoided serious injury thanks to steel-toe safety boots and did not require medical attention. The accused driver is scheduled to appear in court next month.
