The Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) is offering a series of inclusive after-school programs this spring aimed at supporting students with autism and their families.
The programs will run throughout April and May and are open to students with a developmental profile consistent with autism spectrum disorder, as well as siblings of children with disabilities or developmental needs. The initiatives include a mix of virtual and in-person sessions focused on building social skills, confidence and connections through activities such as coding, music, recreation and collaborative play.
Offerings include a five-week Coding and Robotics Club and a six-week Journey to Success Social Skills Program, both delivered virtually, where students can develop problem-solving and communication skills while connecting with peers. In-person options include an eight-week Music Social Skills Program and Recreation Social Skills Program, designed to foster emotional understanding, movement and social interaction, as well as four-week SIBSHOPs workshops for siblings to share experiences and build connections.
The school board says parents and guardians play an important role in the programs and may be required to attend select sessions, with resources provided to help support continued learning at home and at school.
Space in the programs is limited, and families must complete an application by Tuesday, March 31st, with participation subject to screening to ensure the program is a suitable fit. For more information, click here.
