Bradford West Gwillimbury Fire & Emergency Services has completed specialized ice water rescue training to enhance emergency response capabilities in the community.
The department recently concluded an extensive NFPA 1006 Ice Water Rescue Technician certification program, which ran from December through March. The training included online coursework, pool-based practical sessions, and on-ice field exercises, allowing firefighters to develop and apply critical rescue skills in both controlled and real-world winter conditions.
A total of 44 full-time firefighters and 13 volunteer firefighters took part in the program, training in techniques such as self-rescue, cold shock management, tethered rescues, ice survival, boat deployment, and victim recovery. Firefighters also used specialized equipment, including rescue suits, throw bags, boats, and litters, to ensure readiness for real-life emergencies.
“By combining classroom learning with pool and real-world ice training, our members develop the technical skills and confidence required to operate in some of the most challenging rescue environments,” says BWG Fire & Emergency Services Training Division.
“This was an opportunity for us that has improved our response capabilities while reducing risk for both responders and patients,” adds Training Officer P. Hecking. “Throughout the program, critical skills were learned and further honed through hands-on training. This initiative is the result of a project that began two years ago, focused on developing and preparing in-house instructors for its delivery.”
The training supports provincial certification requirements and comes as the growing community continues to increase demand on emergency services, with officials noting ongoing investment in training and equipment is key to maintaining public safety.
