Stevenson Memorial Hospital is marking a major milestone, celebrating 30 years of its Dialysis program and the impact it has had on patients and families in the community.
The program, which began in 1996 with a small team of dedicated nursing staff, has grown into a vital service operating six days a week with six dialysis stations, completing more than 100,000 treatments over the past three decades. Hospital officials say the program allows patients to receive critical care closer to home, improving both accessibility and quality of life.
“It’s wonderful to celebrate a program that has had such a strong impact on our community,” says Deepak Sharma, President and CEO of Stevenson Memorial Hospital. “To have such a critical health care service so close to home is important for our patients and families and we are proud to provide this service at SMH. To have a nursing team that goes the extra mile to ensure our patients have the best experience possible day after day is what makes today’s celebration so special.”
The Dialysis Unit operates as a satellite site of Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre’s Regional Renal Program, with patients initially receiving treatment in Barrie before transitioning to Stevenson Memorial Hospital once stabilized.
The milestone also coincides with Organ Donation Month in April, with the hospital encouraging residents to consider registering as organ donors through the Trillium Gift of Life Network.
