A 41-year-old Barrie man is facing multiple charges following a late-night disturbance in the city’s downtown.
Officers responded shortly before midnight on Wednesday, April 1st to reports of an individual causing a disturbance in the area of Dunlop Street East, including allegedly assaulting pedestrians and placing several people in headlocks while also damaging personal property. Upon arrival, a witness directed officers to the suspect, who allegedly discarded a small plastic bag containing a suspected controlled substance onto the roadway as police approached.
Officers say the individual fled on foot when they attempted to make an arrest, leading to a brief pursuit before he was taken into custody after a struggle, during which an officer was struck in the face. Police say the suspect continued to resist before being handcuffed and transported to Barrie Police Headquarters on Fairview Road, where the substance seized (believed to be cocaine) was submitted for analysis.
The accused has been charged with:
- Causing a Disturbance
- Possession of a Schedule I Substance (Cocaine)
- Assaulting a Peace Officer with Intent to Resist Arrest
- Fail to Comply with a Probation Order
He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
