Barrie Police have transitioned to Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1), introducing new technology aimed at improving emergency response across the community.
The upgraded system enhances the traditional 9-1-1 network by providing dispatchers with faster and more accurate caller location and phone number data, increased reliability and cybersecurity, and improved backup capabilities in the event of a network failure. While residents will continue to dial 9-1-1 as usual, the new system also lays the groundwork for future features such as real-time text messaging and live emergency video calls. The Ontario government has supported the transition with more than $2.6 million in funding since 2022.
“Upgrading Ontario’s public safety communications will be a game changer,” says Solicitor General Michael Kerzner. “Next Generation 9-1-1 gives first responders real-time, life-saving information which means a faster, more effective emergency response. Under the leadership of Premier Ford, our government will always have the backs of those who protect our province. That’s why we are proud to provide funding to Barrie Police Service for this new technology which will mean more calls will be answered, more lives will be saved and people across the city can count on emergency services when it matters most.”
The new system is expected to strengthen emergency response by improving the quality and speed of information shared with dispatchers, helping first responders better assess situations before arriving on scene.
