Town of New Tecumseth Council has confirmed it does not support proposed provincial priority projects tied to growth and housing in South Simcoe.
During a special meeting on April 29th, council reviewed matters related to growth planning, including an Environmental Registry of Ontario posting connected to housing and development needs in the region.
Council received presentations and correspondence regarding growth management and Official Plan Amendment No. 5, but no decision has been made on the amendment at this time. Town staff say they are continuing to review possible next steps.
Council also unanimously approved a resolution directing staff to forward comments to the Province of Ontario as part of the consultation process for Environmental Registry posting No. 026-0383.
According to the Town, council’s response states it does not support the provincial priority projects and wants New Tecumseth included in discussions surrounding any potential community benefits connected to the proposals.
“As a community, we understand the importance of growth and the role municipalities play,” says Mayor Richard Norcross. “We are prepared to work with the Province, but when proposals move forward without the funding, tools, or clarity municipalities need to support them responsibly, then respectfully, that is a no thank you. Our focus must remain on building complete, sustainable communities that work for our residents.”
