Barrie Police have charged a 59-year-old man with impaired driving offences after officers responded to a disturbance at a south-end residence earlier this month.
Police say officers were called to the home on Tuesday, May 5th, regarding unwanted individuals at the property. During the investigation, officers encountered a man holding a can of beer who was allegedly showing signs of impairment, including slurred speech, bloodshot eyes and uncooperative behaviour.
Investigators say officers instructed the man to leave the residence, but then observed him entering the driver’s seat of a parked vehicle. Concerned he may attempt to drive while impaired, officers intervened and placed him under arrest.
The accused was transported to Barrie Police headquarters, where a qualified breath technician determined he was over the legal alcohol limit.
As a result, the Barrie man has been charged with:
- Operation while impaired by alcohol
- Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration over 80 mg
The man’s driver’s licence was automatically suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was impounded for seven days under provincial legislation.
Barrie Police are reminding residents that consuming alcohol or drugs and getting behind the wheel (even in a parked vehicle) can still result in criminal charges.
