Stevenson Memorial Hospital (SMH) has honoured Katherine “Kat” Whissell as the recipient of its 2026 Award of Excellence in Nursing as part of National Nursing Week celebrations.
The award was presented during a ceremony last week after community members were invited earlier this spring to nominate nurses who demonstrated exceptional compassion, professionalism and dedication to patient care.
Whissell, a registered nurse in the hospital’s Emergency Department, was recognized for her work as a triage nurse, mentor, preceptor and mental health advocate. Hospital officials say she is known for consistently going above and beyond for patients, families and colleagues.
“Kat has a great attitude, a strong work ethic, and a deep sense of responsibility,” says Laura Breedon, Clinical Manager of the Emergency Department. “She provides the kind of care that she would want for her own loved ones, and I can confidently say I would be honoured to have her as my nurse.”
Hospital officials say Whissell has received numerous compliments throughout her career from patients, visitors, physicians and co-workers recognizing her compassionate care and commitment to the community.
SMH also acknowledged all nurses nominated for this year’s award, representing departments including emergency, medical-surgical, obstetrics and outpatient care. Officials say the nominations highlighted the dedication and skill nurses bring to patient care every day in New Tecumseth.
