Environmental sustainability efforts are continuing to grow across the Simcoe County District School Board, with a record number of schools taking part in the EcoSchools Canada certification program this year.
The SCDSB says 100 schools participated in the national environmental certification program during the 2025-26 school year, up significantly from 63 schools the previous year.
EcoSchools Canada encourages students and staff to take action on environmental issues while building climate awareness and environmental literacy. Schools earn points toward certification through activities focused on themes such as food, waste reduction, water conservation, energy use, transportation, biodiversity, climate change, outdoor learning, Indigenous ways of knowing, and health and well-being.
As a result of environmental projects, campaigns, and sustainability initiatives completed throughout the year, 15 SCDSB schools achieved Platinum certification, the program’s highest designation. Another 37 schools earned Gold certification, while nine received Silver, 12 achieved Bronze, and 27 schools participated in the program.
The board says the program helps promote student leadership, strengthens classroom learning through real-world environmental experiences, and encourages schools to build a culture of sustainability and environmental stewardship.
The EcoSchools Canada program also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and supports the principles outlined in the SCDSB’s Sustainability Policy.
School communities across Simcoe County participated in a wide range of projects throughout the year, helping to increase awareness of environmental issues while encouraging students to take an active role in creating more sustainable schools and communities.
