A 51-year-old Barrie man is facing impaired driving charges after police say he was found driving with a blood alcohol level nearly three times the legal limit.
Officers received a report at around 10:40 p.m. on Monday, June 22nd about a vehicle stopped in the middle of the road with visible collision damage. The caller reported that another motorist attempted to get the driver’s attention before the vehicle reversed and turned onto Harvie Road.
Earlier that evening, Barrie Police had also received information from staff at a local golf course who believed the same driver may have been impaired. A short time later, the driver was reportedly found passed out behind the wheel at the intersection of Big Bay Point Road and Fairview Road.
Officers located the vehicle as it exited a parking lot near Big Bay Point Road and Leggott Avenue and conducted a traffic stop.
Police say the driver showed several signs of impairment, including glassy eyes, slurred speech and delayed movements. A roadside breath test resulted in a fail, leading to the driver’s arrest.
The man was taken to Barrie Police headquarters, where additional breath tests allegedly showed he was nearly three times over the legal alcohol limit.
The 51-year-old has been charged with:
- operation while impaired
- operation while impaired (80 plus)
His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded under the Highway Traffic Act.
