The Ontario Provincial Police is warning the public about a scam involving fraudsters posing as customer service representatives from major phone companies.
Victims may receive unsolicited phone calls or emails offering account discounts, free phones, upgrades or special promotions.
In one reported incident, a victim was convinced to return newly delivered phones using a prepaid shipping label provided by the fraudster. The victim later learned the return information was not associated with their phone company and that the phones had been sent to an unauthorized third party.
The OPP is reminding the public to be cautious of unsolicited offers involving discounts, upgrades or free devices. Anyone receiving these offers should verify them by contacting their service provider directly using official contact information.
Anyone who suspects they have been the victim of fraud can contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 and report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
